July 1, changes to Chapter 215 go into effect. This Omnibus Budget Reduction Act will reduce the budget for the Public Defenders as well as other governmental organizations.
Personally, I’m a big fan of the Public Defenders, they are willing to take on all sorts of cases in the interest of justice. They also have a vast amount of experience in the court room. However, with the constant reduction of funding they are continuously understaffed. The latest I heard from some Public Defenders they were already dealing with between 80-300 cases each (it’s a broad range apparently). To see just how overworked we just need to look at this ACS report.
